The Top Ten Interview Tips

These top ten tips are guaranteed to help you leave a positive impression on any potential employer. Following all of them could end your long job search and launch the career you have always dreamed of having!

Here are the ten best interviewing that promise to convert an interview into a job offer:

  1. Arrive on time. If necessary, go to the location of the interview a day or two before to make sure you know how to find the location and allow time for any delays. Punctuality is critical to making the right impression. Getting to the interview site 10-15 minutes before the appointment time will give you a few moments to review your answers to questions you might be asked and relax before the meeting.
  2. Understand that is normal to be nervous prior to an interview. The best way to alleviate a case of pre-interview stress is to be prepared for anything that may arise. Sometimes it helps to give yourself a quick pep talk before you go. Confidently remind yourself that you are a talented and qualified candidate for the job, otherwise you would not have been contacted.
  3. Dress appropriately. For men, this usually means a dark suit and a conservative tie. For women, a suit or dress and jacket is a safe bet. Comfortable shoes that are well coordinated are important too, especially if you will be touring the facility. Even if the environment is a casual one, it is better to be overdressed than appear too casual.
  4. Pay attention to details of your appearance. In addition to dressing appropriately, good grooming is a must. Rethink hairstyles that are too trendy. The focus of attention should be on you and your skills, not your hair, jewellery or fragrance.
  5. Answer questions thoughtfully. Try to avoid one-word answers when you can. Interviewers usually have a limited amount of time to get to know you so it is up to you to maximize the opportunity. Listen carefully to each question and phrase your answers in a way that tells how your skills and experience can contribute to the job.
  6. Always be truthful with your answers. If there is anything in your work history that can be construed as negative, be prepared to address it ahead of time. Employers have the right to verify your credentials and conduct background checks. It is far better to be honest from the beginning. Consider the ways to answer questions that can turn negatives into positives. If you were fired from a position, admit it and discuss the experience you gained or the lessons you gained through the event. Employers will appreciate your honesty and character more often than not.
  7. Let your personality come through. The key is to be yourself and let the interviewer form an opinion of a real person, not a robotic semblance of who you are. If you are at ease, friendly and relaxed, the interviewer will feel more comfortable and make the entire process pleasant for both of you.
  8. Make good eye contact without staring. Diverting eye contact or looking toward the floor may give the impression that you are not interested or at worst, appear suspicious. You never want to leave an interviewer feeling like you have something to hide.
  9. If the interview is going well and you are interested in the job, ask for it! Employers appreciate enthusiasm and a direct manner. They want to hire people who are excited about working for them, not people who appear as if the company is just another route to a paycheck.
  10. Lastly, thank your interviewer and anyone else you've come in contact with during your visit. Expressing appreciation is a courtesy that is always remembered and will conclude the interview on a positive note. Follow up the same day with a brief, handwritten note as well.
